Cooking Sharpens Your Mind

Cooking with kids can teach some essential basic cooking techniques while also sharpening their reading and math skills as they read recipes and measures ingredients. Kids also gain knowledge about food science as they combine ingredients and watch as their creations "come to life". Cooking with kids also give opportunity to talk about the importance of good nutrition and helps lay the groundwork for healthy eating in the future. Better yet, cooking with kids is easy and fun! Five and six years old can measure ingredients, cut soft foods with blunt knife, set the table, and garnish foods. Seven and eight year old ca help plan a meal, roll and shape cookies, beat ingredients with a whisk, find ingredients in the cupboard, and make a salad. Finally, 9-12 year olds can open cans, use the microwave oven, prepare simple recipes, shred cheese and vegetable and use an oven and knife under supervision.-- (source: Well Being by sodexo)

Ad In The Sky

One Saturday morning in Boston during the Sail Boston 2009, a lot of people were on line trying to have a glimpse of beautiful ships on exhibit. Out of the blue there were 5 helicopters flying in the bright sky making some ads. People were looking up curious, waiting for the words to form. What a great way of advertising, but an expensive one i think.

Bluelight Specials Is Back!

"This post was sponsored by Kmart. All the opinions are mine."

"Mom are we going to church today?" my little girl asked me while having breakfast. After a long time of going to mass, she is now eager to go and not complaining about the long mass. I am glad for this changes it would now easy for me to dress her up and be at church on time. After church I promised to bring her to the play area so she can have some fun with her friends.

It is good to know that Kmart has an ongoing sale today, August 08, this is a one day sale only. Kmart Bluelight specials has over 40 great specials throughout the day on everything from patio furniture, to grills, jewelries and many more. Other offers will also be at Kmart.com only this Saturday. I am more interested on the glass top table they have to replace the one that we broke last December when we had an ice storm. I already talk to the Kmart staff if is available and luckily it is. With the 70% off the regular price my budget can still go a long way. I might also visit the jewelry section where you can get an extra 10% of diamonds that are already 70% off. Wow, this really is a great deal. It seems that I would have a Christmas in August with this spectacular savings.
Oh by the way, you can now followKmart on Twitter to get more info.

Not Ready to Wake Up

Did you ever wonder why your teenage kids stays in bed late? According to the recent study, teenagers do not naturally wake up as early in the morning as younger kids or adults. The study found that teens' levels of melatonin - the hormone that promotes sleep - rise later at night and remain elevated later in the morning. This means that at 7:30AM, when American high school start class, most teenagers' brains are technically still asleep.
On average , teens need at least 9 hours of sleep each night to be awake and ready to learn.
Here are some tips to help your teens get more Zzzzzs:

* When school starts, make it a rule: No caffeine after school.

* Avoid over-stimulation from TVs, computers, iPods, and cell phones too close to
bedtime.

* Keep the bedroom dark at night and bright in the morning.

* Consider limiting after school activities to allow for more downtime.

* Suggest your teen to take a one hour nap after school.

* Don't let your teen sleep in too late on weekends to avoid throwing him/her off
schedule.

Your vacation to this beautiful town will not be complete without visiting the Titanic museum.

It's A Scorcher Out There!

Last weekend we were in New Jersey for our uncle's funeral. Since that Sunday was really a hot day we decided to just relax at the Liberty State Park before we went home. A lot of people were at the park having picnic, the aroma of a barbecue and some familiar foods wafting in the air. We looked around the park and most of them were Filipinos. I was surprise of the number of Filipinos in that area. No wonder why there is a big Filipino store nearby.

My Daylilies Are Happy!

If there was one that was happy about too much rain in our area, these were my day lilies. They really are blooming continuously. Yesterday we had a small party at home and I got a lot of compliments with those gorgeous flowers. I spent a lot of time last April moving them in one area so I can easily see them in the morning. All my efforts paid off. Now I can see those flowers when I look at the bedroom window.

Time to Update...

It's been almost a month since my last post, it was really hard for me to just sit down and tickle my keyboard. I wasn't so busy either, It's just my brain was not into it.
What am I up to these days... my little girl was already out of school for almost 2 weeks now. We hosted a playdate for 2 days in a row, attended other activities that made my brain out from blogging. I signed her up to a lot of different things to make her busy. Tuesdays is her library day. We are also fixing our garage that was neglected for the longest time. This Friday we are heading to Upstate NY to celebrate the 4th of July and be with my in laws. It would be a lot of fun for my little girl since she loves her grandpa's magic tricks and of course the fireworks.
Have a wonderful day everyone!

Parrot Flower

My friend e-mailed me this beautiful and very rare flower from Thailand. This is a protected species and not allowed to be exported. This species is known to science as Impatiens Psittacina.
Many people believe this flower is a hoax, but there are numerous scientific texts which will verify its existence. The plant gets big but the flowers don't! It reaches a height of 6 feet and is not a small garden impatiens like what we have in our local nursery! The plant looks like a very bad garden weed with beautiful flowers.

What a lovely flower!

Wake Up Looking Younger

Summer is when we talk about vacations, beaches, cooking out, camping, and for kids non stop playing outside. But we also have to remember all that fun in the sun can cause a lot of damage to our skin. Saltwater and chlorine can dry our skin, sunburns and bug bites also affect our healthy skin. Fortunately, this season also brings a lot of tasty nutritious foods. Most of the time we can just pick fruits and vegetables in our own garden. Eating well and sleeping right are the key to have a healthy body.
For women or for people who works long hours like nurses, removing make-up before going to bed is a must to have a younger looking skin. You can read more of the health tips in Scrubs magazine. This reading material has a lot of good informations on staying fit, being healthy and beautiful. Scrubs.com's article on “Wake Up Looking Younger” is a must read since everybody wants to have a healthy looking skin. In spite of our busy schedule you can wake up looking refresh and looks younger by following some easy steps that the magazines provided before dozing off to sleep at night. You can visit their site and find out how.

Mellow Yellow - Play Area

MellowYellowBadge

My entry for this week is a little late. I decided to still post it since I already missed the last one.
We were looking for a play area in our nearby town when we spotted this very quiet place. It was at the back of one of the town schools. My daughter enjoyed it even if there were no kids around. We then transferred to Kid's Kingdom which was close to this one.

A Reason To Smile...

(This was an e-mail from a friend, I decided to share it with you guys.)

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet.
He held up a sign which said: ' I am blind, please help .'
There were only a few coins in the hat.
A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words.
He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.
Soon the hat began to fill up.
A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy.
That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked,
'Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?'
The man said, 'I only wrote the truth. I said what you said but in a different way..' What he had written was:
'Today is a beautiful day and I cannot see it.'

Do you think the first sign and the second sign were saying the same thing?
Of course both signs told people the boy was blind.
But the first sign simply said the boy was blind.
The second sign told people they were so lucky that they were not blind.
Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

Moral of the Story:
Be thankful for what you have. Be creative. Be innovative. Think differently and positively.
Live life with no excuse and love with no regrets.
When life gives you a 100 reasons to cry, show life that you have 1000 reasons to smile. Face your past without regret. Handle your present with confidence.
Prepare for the future without fear. Keep the faith and drop the fear.
The most beautiful thing is to see a person smiling…
And even more beautiful is, knowing that you are the reason behind it!!!

Having a Baby

We parents are very much aware that breast milk is best for our baby, not just the basic nutrition that baby needs but breast milk is packed with disease – fighting substances that protect our baby from illness. I wasn't lucky enough to continue breastfeeding my baby since after my second month, I needed to take medicine that made me stopped from breastfeeding. Six weeks was too short to nurture her with my breastmilk. I loved the quiet moment she and I had together when I was breastfeeding her. I loved the look of contentment on her face after I fed her. It wasn't my plan to give her the formula but because of what happened I really had to. My baby's pediatrician suggested the formula that's best for her. I gave her Isomil but there is a Parent's Choice Infant Formula that is not as expensive. It is actually 50% less than the other brand. Since all infant formulas sold in the U.S. are required to be manufactured in accordance with, and meet the nutritional requirements of, the Federal Food, drug and Cosmetic Act for infant formula under the regulation of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration it is worth to check with your pediatrician of what is best for your baby. You can use an online baby formula calculator to see how much you can save versus the other brand.

Finding The Best CD Rates

All our investments nowadays go down but if you notice the price of gas in your area it goes up so fast. I can't believe this is happening in today's economy. Even finding the best CD rates is challenging this days. I hope our economy will get better soon.

Rebuilding Our Retaining Wall

I just received an estimate from the landscaper I talked to a week ago about our plan to rebuild our existing stone wall. It is our priority this summer to do something about it. Because of too much snow last winter, the wall started to collapse. Poor drainage contributes to the problems of frost heaving. This affects the foundation that is not secure in the ground below the frost level. We don't want to always have this problem every year but I was surprised with the estimate since we do have the materials needed. We are expecting the labor would be less. But anyway, we still have to wait for some quotations on the mail so we can have a good comparison and decide what to do from there.
When talking to the landscaper he told me that he had a problem finding our address because the house number is on the front of our mailbox , which is partly hidden. He then suggested to install an address plaques where the big rock is located so that the number would be obvious when you are on the road. That is a good suggestion though, but it is not our priority right now.
I learned a lot while talking to him and I am considering some of his suggestions. That lead me to look online and check what to get if we decide to replace our mailbox. I can't believe a vast selections I found and smitten with those gorgeous looking whitehall mailboxes available. I have now a good idea where to find something I need for our home and garden accents.

My Little Girl And The Dandelion Puff Balls

Dandelion could be a pesky weed for some but it's a joy for my little girl. After school my daughter loves to stop by in our yard to look for some puff balls. She loves to make a wish before blowing each one as hard as she can. I do enjoy watching her but knowing what
she wishes for breaks my heart. I make sure when I mow the lawn that those puff balls are not disturbed for my daughter to play with when she comes home. I wasn't sure if after this few days of rain there will still be dandelions in our yard.

Dandelion...

First I make a wish, then I blow real hard,
And the little dandelions blow all over the yard,
And I wait and I hope for my wish to come true.
Guess there's only so much a dandelion can do.
Some people think that dandelions are a pest,
But I think that dandelions are the best.
Dandelions, don't you know, are really cool,
And dandelion haters should go back to school.

What Do You Think They Were Doing?

I wasn't sure if this is their way of entertaining tourists or they were just hanging around there. It's obvious this wasn't Air Force One that was on the news a few weeks ago, they were the NYPD roaming around and waving the tourists on top of the Rockefeller Center. What are they doing? I don't know.
This happened when we visited New York City, a few days before the Air Force One incident that was in the news. The NYPD chopper circled the Rockefeller Center observation deck a few times, then flew off to buzz the Empire State Building.

In an age where almost everybody is connected through digital technology, we are always looking for some advancement. As an internet user the speed of the internet is crucial to whatever things I do online. Even for people who use the internet for entertainment, a fast internet connection is a great advantage. Frances Williams ...

is a large-leafed hosta with wide yellow margins that surround the blue-green centers, making it very striking. This stunning beauty blooms from July to August. and has been at the top of the American Hosta Society's popularity poll for many years. This is a low care perennial.
The plant is named after the hobby breeder who developed it, Frances Williams, who has 17 hostas to her credit.

The parent

This leaf measures 15 inches already and it still getting bigger.

The baby (started as a seed) She is now 2 years old. I am not sure if the leaves will still change color. But her mom definitely has a mixed of colors.

A Guide To A Healthy Living

If you are in a medical field you probably are familiar with the Scrubs magazine. But Scrubs is not just a clinical nursing site. This very interesting magazine talks about everything. From health, beauty, fashion, love, money, you name it, they have an article about it. Plus you will also get a chance to have an inside look at a nurse's lifestyle. A fun, warm, timely yet original, speaks to the “stages of a nursing career” (such as student nurse, new nurse, seasoned/mentor). I like reading their inspirational stories , why they chose to be nurses. Becoming a nurse is a vocation. They really possess a caring personality . They are an inspiration and deserves to be appreciated. I truly enjoy reading this uplifting magazine. This can be one of your best guide for everyday living.
This cool online magazine has a portion where you can nominate someone for a Scrubby Award. They also have a nursing poll where readers can participate to vote. Scrubsmag.com is a site to go if you are looking for health tips, guides, and interesting articles to read. They are constantly updating their site to better serve their readers.

What An Experience!

One time, after I was done with my volunteer work in my daughter's school, I went straight to the store and did some shopping. It was already 2:00 PM when I realized I haven't eaten my lunch, so I decided to just get something from the Chinese restaurant. I was in a hurry because at 2:45PM I have to be in school again to pick her up. I was so occupied that time, I didn't realized that I left my keys inside the car. I called my husband and informed him of it. He then called the fire department and in 15 minutes they were there ready to help.I picked up my daughter on time. Kudos to the Fitchburg firefighters for being so quick to respond. It's good to know that there is 5.11 Tactical series that is available to enhance the safety, accuracy, speed and performance of law enforcement and even firefighting professionals.

The beautiful lady slipper was my first entry one year ago. I can't believe it is already a year old. I became inactive after few months of blogging though. My good friend Mira encouraged me to go on. Thanks Mira, she was right, now I'm loving it. I gained a lot of friends and still adding more. I also want to thank Carlota for my beautiful layout. To all my friends and my frequent visitors, thank you.

Last Night's Frost warning

Last night, there was a frost warning in some part of New England including the area where I live. The weather was so good for the past couple of weeks so I planted some tomatoes and even eggplant in our small garden. I also had some flowering annuals that I planted. So last night when the frost warning was announced I covered some of my plants to protect from frost. I learned my lesson, next year I won't plant sensitive plants until after Memorial Day.

Ethical Hacking

Do you love to use the computer for the simple joy of using the computer? Seeing if you can actually make it do something? You know, writing a program to do something for the same reason people climb Mount Everest, “because it's there”. This is hacking. Not the criminal activity of trojans and spamming that is often called hacking these days (I call it cracking) but computing for the sake of doing so. Hacking is often a gray area, often unauthorized access of a system without intending harm. How would you like to be paid to do so? Well, one of the best ways to stop the 'bad' hacking is to figure out how the crackers do their dirty deeds by “attacking” a system and then plugging the holes so the real bad guys can't do it. Who would do something like that? How about you! Would you like to be a Certified Ethical Hacker? There are “boot camp” style courses where you can learn “Ethical Hacking”, where you find the holes that need plugging. IT Security, disaster recovery, and secure coding where you can learn how to prevent the bad guys from damaging or even taking over your systems. The EC-Council offers online classes and a “Hacker Halted” security conference in Miami September 20-24, 2009.

Mellow Yellow - Dutch Shoes

MellowYellowBadge

Would you like to fly on a dutch shoe? This is one of the many rides at Story Land, a place where the fantasy lives. Kids love this fairytale attraction located in Glen, New Hampshire. We are planning to visit this place again in June since our last visit was when my little girl was only 3. I am pretty sure that this time she would appreciate it more.

Direct TV's Loyal Subscriber

We have been a subscriber of directtv for over ten years now. Yes 10 years, that is how loyal we are to this company. We are pretty happy with their service. We called them a couple of months ago to renew our contract for another year. Their customer service is excellent. The last time we talk to them, they gave us free HD receiver and 1 year free upgrade. How cool is that? The biggest advantage of directtv are the sports packages they have, such as the exclusive programming with NASCAR that the sports enthusiasts are looking for. Our Day Trip Experience

We are fond of day trips. My husband loves to drive and bring us in some places where we can explore new sights. One time we were driving in a back roads in a hot summer day, I turned on the air conditioner and there was a strong vibration coming from the air conditioning compressor. He didn't have any clue what was wrong. He checked the belt tensioner to find out if the belt was loose but he said it was ok. He thought that maybe the A/C compressor could be coming apart internally. We didn't have any option but to continue driving in a hot summer day without the A/C. My little girl suggested that it is time for daddy to buy a new car.

Why Men Cheat?

I love to watch Oprah show and a few months back one of the topic was about “why men cheat.”It was shocking to hear that 1 out of 3 men cheats. 92% of men say they don't cheat for the sex.

Here are some signs that a man is cheating:

* Spending more time away from home
* A reduction in sex with his wife
* Avoiding contact (e-mails & phone calls) with his wife
* Criticizing his wife more

Reasons why Men cheat:

Emotional disconnection and lack of thoughtful gestures from their wives as the main reason why they cheated. Because of the lack of attention at home, they sought out someone who would give them attention and make them feel good.
A man in the audience commented that he felt like he had become a piece of furniture in his home, Gary Neuman addressed that the bottom line with men cheating is truly not about sex, but about how the other woman makes the man feel. Gary commented that men love to win and during his research men would say that they gave up in their marriage because they felt like they just couldn't win.

A Kid - Friendly Vacation

Do you think taking a vacation without the kids can be done? Some did it. They said, they enjoyed and felt recharged after spending time with their spouse. But after I gave birth to my little girl, it seemed impossible for us to just spend some time together. If I can, I would love to spend a few days in Florida. I always want to spend some time in the beach, stroll around town and do some shopping in a Prime outlets, where bargains are plenty. Spending vacation with just the two of us is just a dream. Whenever we go on vacation we want to be with our little girl and enjoy her company. Anyway, in Kissimmee, we can still combine the fun, rides shopping and exploring the beautiful sceneries this place has to offer.
The best time to go on vacation in Kissimme really depends on weather you are traveling with school kids or not. Although the parks are packed when the school is out but it is the best time for our family to fulfill our dream getaway. Though money is tight, you can still get away because Kissimmee is giving away three weekend getaways (3 days/2 nights) for two; and two week-long vacations for four. Drawings will be held on or around 4/1/09, 5/1/09 and 6/1/09. You can enter the sweeptakes and get a chance to win a free vacation by visiting their website. See you there!

Our Playful Little Feline

Peekaboo...

We love our cat. Actually Lara is the fourth cat in our household. But this little feline is so different. She really exhibits a playful behavior of a cat. She doesn't lose energy to run around the house, going up and down the stairs as fast as she can, and she even ruin the bottom lining of our chair and sneaked inside. She is such funny little cat. Sometimes I want to scream but my little girl always reminds me this, " Mom she is just a playful cat." My DH suggested to get another one so they will play each other and diminish her playful behavior. I'm not sure about that. But blogging helps me a little bit, instead of screaming I usually grab my camera and just take a picture of her while doing it.

Webhosting - Choosing The Right One

It took me a while to convince my husband to change our internet provider. I wanted to save money with the new package but my husband was already satisfied with our old service and with his webhosting provider. I promised him that I will search for a reliable webhosting service. I found out that choosing the right one could be difficult to find. The sheer number of sites can be overwhelming.  It's easy to get locked into a long term contract with a bad provider if you aren't careful.  There is a site where you can review the different webhosting providers, It is an easy to use site where you can easily review web hosting providers for what's important to you.  Perhaps you are on a budget.  Perhaps you need to host a large amount of data or need large bandwidth, or need PHP support.  Maybe you need good tools to help you create a website.  You can find sites which offer free domains, or others will assist with advertising such as Google AdSense or Yahoo Marketing, or sites which are better if you need multiple domains.  You can even find "green" hosting, providers which are solar or wind powered!
They have a blog which contains tips and what to look for in a hosting company, explanation of security issues and essentially everything you need to know to find a provider to get your site up and running.

A Taste Of Home

We brought our little girl to Jollibee in New York when she found out that it is already opened. I showed her the jollibee commercial and she became a fan since then. Actually she didn't care about the food but she was so eager to see the mascot. Mommy was the one who wanted the taste of spaghetti.
